Gallery: Mirrors
Ah! Mirrors! They seem to be the staple of every mosaic artist’s repertoire and deservedly so as who can resist the energy that one brings to a room?
Geisha’s Delight
This piece was created for the 2010 Howland Community open. It was inspired by postcards collected on a trip to Japan.

Metta Sutta for the Rainy Season
This mirror was created for the Corvallis Fine Arts showcase. It definitely evokes the spirit of the Vetro Tessuto class I took in May but with my own spin on it. The familiar Buddhist chant reads:
May I and all beings be filled with loving kindness.
May I and all beings be free from inner and outer dangers.
May I and all beings be well in body and mind.
May I and all beings be happy and free.
As the ancient story goes, a group of monks were once directed by their master to proceed to a forest to spend the rainy season. The deities who inhabited the forest were disconcerted by their arrival. They harassed them in numerous ways throughout the night with the intention of scaring them away.
Living under such conditions was impossible and the monks soon returned to their Master to tell him of their difficulties. The Buddha instructed them in the Metta sutta and advised their return, equipped with the mantra for protection.
The monks went back to the forest, and practicing the verses, permeated the whole atmosphere with their radiant thoughts of metta or loving kindness. The tree deities were so affected by the power this great love that they permitted them to meditate in peace.
Desirderata: You Are A Child of the Universe
You are a child of the Universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the Universe is unfolding as it should.
